I got my period for the first time
during the 5th grade Christmas Concert for school.
I was in choir.
I was wearing a velvet burgundy dress
with white tights and black shoes.
I knew what it was when I saw it in my underwear later that night.
But I was embarrassed about it for some reason
so I hid it from my mom.
I even lied about it once.
I don't know why.
My mom was super cool about it.
When she approached me she was soft spoken,
welcoming and reassuring.
It wasn't until summertime when I was wearing white shorts
that I couldn't deny the truth any longer....
Oh, being a girl and growing up.
